A group of riders on dirt bikes escaped a police pursuit Thursday in east Los Angeles County, performing street stunts and waving to news helicopters, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol responded at 3:52 p.m. to reports of racing between several motorcycles and dirt bikes on the westbound 60 Freeway at Rosemead Boulevard near South El Monte. As officers tried to pull the racers over, two drivers fled, the CHP said, leading to a chase through various surface streets and freeways.

The riders, described by police as a teenager and a teenager, were traveling the wrong way on the 710 Freeway, the CHP said, riding at “various speeds,” though no specific speed was specified in a press release.

The release also failed to mention the group of nearly 20 drivers who joined the fleeing riders on motorcycles and four-wheelers captured by KTLA's news helicopter during the chase.

Riders greeted each other with fist bumps, waved their hands aloft to helicopters while doing wheelies and street stunts, swerved dangerously close to other motorists, and were pulled over by police. The group at one point stopped at a gas station to refuel. KTLA reported.

Police eventually called off the chase and left a police helicopter to monitor them “unable to continue.” Not arrested.
