Southern California red flag warning extended to Thursday night – Jobsmaa.com

While the worst of the Santa Ana winds appear to have passed, Southern California is far from out of the woods when it comes to fire danger. On Tuesday, the National Weather Service extended a red flag warning for the region until Thursday evening.

That warning was originally scheduled to expire at 10 p.m. Tuesday, but was kept in place as winds eased and were expected to blow again Wednesday.

Winds will strengthen Wednesday afternoon, peak Thursday morning and taper off later that evening, the weather service said. Very low humidity levels – less than 10% – will continue to plague the region, creating a ready source of dry fuel to feed any potential fire.

Forecasters warned that a red flag warning could extend into Friday for some of the region's most windy parts. However, the predicted winds paled in comparison to the 100-mph gusts recorded on January 7 when the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires broke out. They are expected to be milder than the strongest winds that hit the region on Monday, when a rare “extremely dangerous situation” warning was in effect.

Wind gusts of 88 mph were recorded Monday morning in the western San Gabriel Mountains along the Magic Mountain Truck Trail. Wind gusts reached 70 mph in the Santa Susana Mountains Monday afternoon, Weather Service meteorologist Brian Lewis said.

In more welcome news, light rain is expected in the region starting late Friday and into early Saturday.

Rain is much needed in dry mountains, but mudslides and landslides are likely in burn areas. However, Bryan said the coming rains are unlikely to be heavy enough to cause serious damage. A third of an inch of rain is expected in LA County.
