The theft of copper wiring from a school's electrical system forced the cancellation of classes at a Vallejo school indefinitely, district officials said.
A power outage occurred during Saturday morning's basketball game at Solano Wideman Leadership Academy, district spokeswoman Selena Baguio said. Copper wiring was stolen from the electrical system and the theft was reported to the Vallejo Police Department.
Classes are canceled until further notice; One step, the repair is expected to take about a week District report. If the school has to be closed for an extended period of time, the district will try to minimize disruption by placing students elsewhere.
Notifications about transfers and repairs will be shared on ParentSquare, officials said.
Copper wire theft is a growing problem throughout California. Stolen copper can be resold as scrap metal. Last year, the Los Angeles City Council allocated at least $600,000 to fund a task force that made dozens of arrests and recovered more than 2,000 pounds of copper wire.
Street lights and metro lines have been shut down by copper thieves. Thieves are accused of untying the so-called “Ribbon of Light” from the 6th Street Bridge being rebuilt in 2023 and stealing about 7 miles of copper wire — worth about $11,000.
