Although rain is expected to taper off Sunday evening into Monday, the National Weather Service said flash flooding and mudslide risks for wildfire-scarred areas will continue through Monday afternoon.
The center of the storm is expected to move over LA County on Monday, creating a risk of intense, localized rain throughout the day. Ahead of the storm, the National Weather Service issued flood watches for the Palisades, Eaton, Hughes, Franklin and Bridge fire scars.
High-intensity rains — more than half an inch per hour — can wreak havoc on burned areas, increasing the potential for flooding and landslides on fire-repellant soils.
At a town hall Sunday, officials told victims of the Palisades fire that the District of Public Works has installed 15,000 K-rail barriers and 50,000 sandbags in the burned area to protect property and the environment. The Los Angeles Fire Department was working to clear a mudslide on Palisades Drive Sunday evening.
The flood watch expires Monday at 4 p.m.
Rainfall is very variable in certain parts of Los Angeles Over an inch of rain by 7pm on Sunday and other areas get less than a tenth of that. According to the National Weather Service.
A National Weather Service station at Eaton Dam, near the Eaton Fire burn scar, reported 0.13 of an inch of rain. One Monte Nido station — near the Palisades Fire burn scar in the Santa Monica Mountains — recorded 0.55 of an inch.
Mountains in Greater Los Angeles Between 1 and 5 inches of snow fell by Sunday morning, and a National Weather Service spokeswoman said the Oxnard office was aware of social media reports of hail near Ventura.
