The SBI PO Selection Process 2026 is conducted in three phases.
Phase 1: Preliminary Examination – This is an online objective test of 100 marks (English, Quantitative Aptitude & Reasoning) with sectional timing. It is qualifying in nature. Candidates who clear the sectional and overall cut-off move to Mains.
Phase 2: Main Examination – This consists of an Objective Test (200 marks) and a Descriptive Test (50 marks – English Letter & Essay). It tests deeper knowledge in Reasoning, Data Analysis, General Awareness, and English.
Phase 3: Group Discussion & Interview – Candidates who qualify Mains appear for Psychometric Test (qualifying), Group Exercises (20 marks) and Personal Interview (30 marks).

Group Discussion & Interview (Phase III)
Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for Group Discussion (20 marks) and Personal Interview (30 marks). A Psychometric Test is also conducted (qualifying in nature). The Group Discussion tests communication, leadership, and team skills. The Interview assesses personality, banking awareness, current affairs, and suitability for the role of Probationary Officer. Final merit is prepared with 75% weightage to Mains and 25% to GD + Interview.

SBI PO Joining and Training Period
After final selection, candidates receive an appointment letter. Newly recruited Probationary Officers undergo 2 years of probation. The initial training is conducted at SBI’s Apex Training Institutes. During probation, they are posted in various branches and departments to gain practical exposure in banking operations. Upon successful completion of probation, they are confirmed as Assistant Managers.
