UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2026 is prescribed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for candidates seeking eligibility for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) through the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET).

UGC NET 2026 Eligibility Overview

What is UGC NET?

UGC NET is a national-level eligibility test conducted twice a year (typically June and December cycles) to determine candidates’ suitability for Assistant Professor positions and for Junior Research Fellowship plus Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges.

Qualifying for JRF enables research fellowships and often prioritizes PhD admissions, while qualifying for Assistant Professor alone allows consideration for faculty roles. Many universities require UGC NET qualification (or equivalent like PhD under UGC norms) for regular faculty recruitment and as a filter for PhD entry.

UGC NET Educational Qualification 2026

Minimum Qualification Required

Candidates must hold a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) from a UGC-recognized university/institution in a relevant subject listed under UGC NET (e.g., humanities, languages, social sciences, computer science & applications, electronic science, etc.). UGC-approved open/distance learning PG degrees are valid if recognized as equivalent.

Minimum Percentage Requirement

Candidates awaiting final PG results or in the final year are provisionally eligible but must secure the required percentage upon declaration; otherwise, candidature is cancelled.

UGC NET Eligibility for Final Year Students

  • Final-year Master’s students or those with awaited results can apply provisionally. They must complete the degree with the required marks within the timeframe specified in the information bulletin (often two years from result date). Eligibility certificates are issued only after proof submission.

Note on 4-Year UG Degree Holders

  • Candidates with a 4-year Bachelor’s degree may be eligible for JRF and PhD admission (if meeting percentage norms like 75% in some cases), but typically not for Assistant Professor unless they also hold a Master’s.

UGC NET Age Limit 2026

Age Limit for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

  • Maximum age is 30 years (for General category) as on the specified cut-off date (often the first day of the month of the exam or June 1 for June cycle). Relaxations apply.

Age Limit for Assistant Professor

  • No upper age limit, candidates of any age can apply if they meet the educational criteria.

Age Relaxation Rules (JRF)

Subject Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should apply in the subject of their Master’s degree. If the PG subject isn’t listed, they may opt for a related subject per UGC’s “Mapping of PG subjects to NET subjects” in the brochure. Choose wisely—lack of background may affect performance/verification.

UGC NET Eligibility for Reserved Categories

OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender candidates receive 5% relaxation in minimum marks (50% instead of 55%). Age relaxations and cut-off benefits follow central government/UGC norms. Valid category certificates (non-creamy layer for OBC-NCL) are mandatory.

UGC NET Eligibility for Foreign Degree Holders

Master’s degrees from foreign universities require equivalence certification from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) or a UGC-recognised authority. Without it, eligibility may not be granted.

Who is NOT Eligible for UGC NET?

  • Holders of only Bachelor’s degrees (without Master’s).

  • Diploma/PG Diploma holders are not equivalent to Master’s per UGC/AIU.

  • Degrees from unrecognized universities/courses.

  • Applicants in unrelated subjects without UGC mapping approval.

  • Provisional qualifiers who fail to meet the PG percentage later.

Documents Required for Eligibility Verification

  • Master’s marksheets and degree certificate.

  • Final year/appearing certificate (if applicable).

  • Category certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/EWS/Third Gender) in the prescribed format.

  • Date of Birth proof (e.g., 10th certificate).

  • Identity proof (Aadhaar, etc.).

  • Photo and signature (for application/admit card).

Verification occurs during certificate issuance, employment, or fellowship registration.

UGC NET Result & Eligibility Certificate

Results declare qualification for JRF & Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor only, or PhD admission categories. Eligibility certificates can be downloaded via the NTA/UGC portal or DigiLocker. JRF has a validity period for availing the fellowship.
